Architectural services between different architects, and particularly between "specialty contractors" and "architects" can vary widely. An "Architect" is defined by Webster as, "one whose profession is to design, draw plans for, and supervise the construction of buildings or other structures". The American Institute of Architects defines architectural "Services" as being broken down into four "Phases": "Design Phase", "Construction Documents Phase", "Bidding or Negotiation Phase" and "Construction Phase". We can provide invaluable services from the very beginning of a project, until the day you move in. However, each client and each project is different, and it is possible for us to consult only on an hourly basis or to be involved in only one phase or the other. There are hundreds of "specialty contractors" that relate to the design and construction of homes and cottages. For example, there are "Hand Crafted Log Fabricators" that can build and install a log shell package; there are "Timber-Framers" that mortise and tenon a timber frame and can erect it at your site; there are "Masons" that construct foundations and fireplaces; there are licensed "Sewage Contractors" that can provide soil testing and construct an on-site sewage treatment systems, and on and on. The service that Wilderness Architecture, inc. can provide is to combine all of the pieces. We are not "Construction Contractors", but rather we consult with and coordinate the entire project. We direct the entire process with your help! We are involved with our clients from 1) the original site analysis, 2) identifying the specific program needs, 3) identifying the desired architectural style, 4) designing the project, 5) preparing construction drawings and specifications, 6) arranging for competitive bids from interested local General Contractors and craftsman, and 7) preparing Owner and Contractor Agreements and monitoring the construction process thru completion. |
